A "Career Politician" Without A "Real Job"

Aug 31st, 2012

I am referring to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), of course. This is how Ryan's own brother, Tobin, referred to him during a chat with Fox News' Megyn Kelly on Wednesday.

Mitt Watch: Now He's Just Lying... Again

May 29th, 2012

If there's any hunk of red meat for self-declared "conservatives" which they can be relied upon to devour more voraciously than charges of "big government" I don't know what it is. Speaking to a crowd in Colorado today, Mittens Romney made the following statement:
"We have 145,000 more government workers under this president. Let’s send them home and put you back to work."
This isn't merely spin and it's not some sort of exaggeration. It's an outright, bold-faced, incredibly big-balled, straight up lie. Period. End of discussion. At least it should be.

Since President Obama took office, six hundred and eight thousand public sector jobs have been eliminated (SOURCE).

Here's the rub; Obama has actually presided over the largest contraction of government in generations, something the right has demanded for as long as can be remembered. That's well over half a million consumers not participating in the economy during the worst downturn in 80 years, a fact which has directly contributed to the stalled recovery by further depressing demand.

To Obama's army of detractors I would say this:

You can have wildly shrinking government or a robust and dynamic short term rebound.

You can't have both.

You have received full delivery on one of your movement's core demands and it is biting our country on the ass.

Sleep tight.

About Those Jobs Numbers

Sept 2nd, 2011

Well, the August jobs numbers are out and they are bad. In fact, the employment figures for the last month are net zero. In the midst of those clamoring to score points on today's report, Matt Yglesias makes this observation:

"Looks like we had 17,000 thousand new private sector jobs in August, which were 100 percent offset by 17,000 lost jobs in the public sector.

The striking zero result should galvanize minds, but it’s worth noting that this has been the trend all year. The public sector has been steadily shrinking. According to the conservative theory of the economy, when the public sector shrinks that should super-charge the private sector. What’s happened in the real world has been that public sector shrinkage has simply been paired with anemic private sector growth. This is what I’ve called “The Conservative Recovery.” Conservatives complain about the results because the President is a Democrat named Barack Obama. But the policy result is what conservatives say they want. Steady cuts to the government sector, offset somewhat by private sector growth. The reality is that this dynamic sucks, and we ought to be forcefully trying to avoid public sector layoffs knowing that workers are also customers for the private sector. But we’re not.

Hopefully Ben Bernanke and co will ponder this as they head into their September meeting."

Once more, leaders from both parties are ignoring the fact that the government is contributing to the collapse in demand.

Gov. Walker's Very Bad Math

Feb 18th, 2011

Wisconsin has a budget surplus though the middle of 2011 totaling $56,362,800. SOURCE LINK BELOW

As we reported yesterday, the new Wisconsin state tax cuts that went into effect are 150% larger than the projected deficit. We also deflated the meme that the public sector pays more when the opposite is true. Another interesting fact has come to our attention.

The Legislative Fiscal Bureau, Wisconsin's equivalent of the CBO, shows very different numbers than Gov. Scott Walker has been publicly proclaiming. He has been repeatedly asserting that the state is "broke now."

The Public Sector And Paul Ryan

Feb 17th, 2011

This morning, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) made a couple of incredibly snide remarks in an attempt to back up Gov. Scott Walker and his proposal to break the current state employee contract by rolling back wages. They need to do this to fill a deficit caused primarily by brand new corporate tax breaks. First, he compared the peaceful assembly of those workers to the upheaval in Egypt. (Hat tip to Beck?). Then, he pushed forward one the biggest single lies the right wing has in their arsenal. He advanced the meme that there is a wild disparity between private and public sector compensation in favor of the public worker.
It is not true. He is smart. Which means he is either uninformed... or he is lying.
