ALEC's Dumbest Minion

Feb 6th, 2012

In the latest and arguably most grotesque reveal of the American Legislative Exchange Council (more about them HERE) outright controlling conservative state lawmakers comes this jaw-dropper about Rep. Sandy Burgin (R-FL).

Miami New Times reports:

"Burgin introduced a bill written by the American Legislative Exchange Council (more on what that is later), but she made one mistake. She forgot to delete a portion that included the groups mission statement. Yes, she tried to introduce the following language into the Florida statutes:
WHEREAS, it is the mission of the American Legislative Exchange Council to advance Jeffersonian principles of free markets, limited government, federalism, and individual liberty.

Burgin realized her mistake, pulled the bill, and reintroduced it under a different number 24 hours later, but not before Common Blog found the mistake."

You'd think ALEC would do a little bit more prep with their drones. Something along the lines of, "by the way, it would look really, really bad if you forget to omit that part before submitting this to your peers."

Bill Gates Funding ALEC

Dec 5th, 2011

Karoli lays out the details:

"It isn't a small grant, by any stretch. $376,635 to be paid over a period of 22 months. That's about $17,000 per month dropping into the coffers of one of the most evil organizations in the country."

As if you actually needed one more reason not to by a Windows based machine.

Luridly Loathsome Laffer

Nov 6th, 2011
by F. Grey Parker

As much as rational economists from both right and left continue to hope that Art Laffer will, at long last, simply shut up, Mr. Laffer shows no signs of doing so. Nor, it would seem, does he have any interest in lessening the actual damage to our country that he has done over the course of two generations. In fact, Mr. Laffer continues to double down on promoting the very policies which have brought us to our knees.

Yesterday afternoon, Neil Cavuto hosted Mr. Laffer over at Fox Business.

Something so very wrong was said that it cannot go unchallenged; It was not any part of the predictable litany of anti-Obamaisms. Nor was it Mr. Laffer's pandering declaration that the stimulus is "the reason we have... high unemployment." What was truly shocking was Cavuto's description of Mr. Laffer as "about as fair and balanced an economist as you're going to get."

This is rather like describing Idi Amin as having been a well rounded humanitarian.

A Frightening Perspective

June 10th, 2011

Augusto Pinochet and Henry Kissinger
Yesterday, Robert Parry wrote a piece drawing an analogy between the tactics of elites in Chile prior to the deposition of Salvador Allenede, particularly under the guidance of their U.S. sponsors, and the efforts we see today from groups like ALEC, The Koch enterprises and the GOP.

It really isn't as far-fetched as it should sound. There are dramatic similarities, for example, between El Mercurio and FOX News.
