It's About Time

Oct 7th, 2011

Much to my surprise, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NEVdeveloped a spine last night:

"In a shocking development Thursday evening, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NEV) triggered a rarely used procedural option informally called the “nuclear option” to change the Senate rules.

Reid and 50 members of his caucus voted to change Senate rules unilaterally to prevent Republicans from forcing votes on uncomfortable amendments after the chamber has voted to move to final passage of a bill.

Reid’s coup passed by a vote of 51-48, leaving Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) fuming.

The surprise move stunned Republicans, who did not expect Reid to bring heavy artillery to what had been a humdrum knife fight over amendments to China currency legislation. "

FAA Showdown Over... For Now...

August 4th, 2011

The good news? The crisis over funding the FAA is apparently over. The bad news? It's not really over.

Just in via CBS:

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Thursday that Congress has reached a deal to end the partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration.

"I am pleased to announce that we have been able to broker a bipartisan compromise between the House and the Senate to put 74,000 transportation and construction workers back to work," Reid said in a statement. "This agreement does not resolve the important differences that still remain. But I believe we should keep Americans working while Congress settles its differences, and this agreement will do exactly that."

The FAA shut down on July 23 after Congress failed to pass an extension of the agency's existing budget authorization. Congress has done that simple extension, with no strings attached, 20 times in the past four years."

If Congress "settles its deifferences" in a way similar to the debt deal, I would recommend planning travel via rail for the foreseeable future.

That's Not What I Meant

May 19th, 2011

When I said, "four more years! Four more years!" I was not referring to this. From TPM:

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) have agreed to a deal on a four-year extension of the Patriot Act, the Associated Press reports.

Officials in both parties told the AP that the deal between Reid and Boehner calls for a quick vote. Closure on the motion to proceed on the Patriot Act will take place at 5 p.m. on Monday, Reid said on the floor of the Senate late Thursday. "The idea is to pass the extension with as little debate as possible to avoid a protracted and familiar argument over the expanded power the law gives to the government," the AP reported."

I noted the Left's version of Obama Derangement Syndrome the other day which provoked an astonishing level of vitriol from some readers. If the progressive base needs a villain, I repeat my position from late last year that they should be hammering Reid instead.

Why Pulling The Omnibus Bill Was A Disaster

Dec 17th, 2010

By F. Grey Parker

In my final post yesterday, I stated bluntly that Sen. Harry Reid's (D-NV) sudden surrender on the omnibus spending bill was a "disaster." To me, this statement was as simple as saying the world is round, the Sun rises in the East and the only sure things are death and taxes. I took it to be a truism. There was more than a little disagreement over this. I was surprised at the number of contrarian e-mails that awaited me this morning. Some of the commentary so strongly opposed my position, including that of arguably my most devoted reader, that it is necessary to plead my case in some detail.
