Hey, Conservatives! FOXNews Thinks You Are Stupid.

Feb 9th, 2011

By Stephanie Baselice

I have been trying for years now to find a respectful way to reach conservatives, many of whom can be numbered among my own family. Respect for each other is important. This is especially hard these days, since the so called “conservative” Tea Party movement has become a uniting umbrella for right wing tribalism. This tribalism is rooted in a narrative that pits those who gained from civil rights and the other social changes of the past century against those who suddenly found their privilege undermined by a new morality. This narrative took the place of the galvanizing Freedom-Loving Capitalist vs. Red Menace narrative of the cold war, and has been over-fed by billionaire and corporate interests to all but eliminate any actual political discourse between conservatives and anyone else. So, respectfully, WAKE UP PEOPLE! Fox News is not conservative, and it does indeed think its audience is stupid. So let's not all be stupid. Conservatives and Progressives are not natural enemies. That conflict is trumped up for ratings and votes. Progressives must remember there is a very important place in democratic society for conservative thought. True conservatives slow the pace of change. They question the value of progressive ideas; bring up concerns about the cost of actions under consideration.

Republican Budget Cut Proposal Idiocy

Dec 28th, 2010

It doesn't get much better than this. From the NY Times:
"Note to the incoming Republican majority in the House: Eliminating government programs that do not exist does not save money.

Of the few specific cuts that Congressional Republicans have proposed in their promised assault on annual budget deficits, one of the biggest by far would save $25 billion over 10 years, they claim, by ending an emergency welfare fund. The Republican Study Committee, which includes more than 100 of the most conservative House Republicans, promoted the idea in a statement this week, saying, “With the national debt quickly approaching $14 trillion, Washington needs to get serious about cutting spending.”
Well, seriously, the fund expired Sept. 30."
We have 2 years of this to look forward to. This is a reminder of what President Obama is up against.

Kristol's Phony Journalism

Oct. 8th, 2010

by F. Grey Parker

Today in the Weekly Standard, William Kristol seems to be attempting to gin-up support for Israel as a pre-election litmus test.

Citing a variety of numbers from a poll conducted by the "Emergency Committee For Israel," Kristol makes this warning:

"So it’s not only that the American public is pro-Israel by more than two to one. It’s also that being anti-Israel is an actual disqualifier for a majority of American voters.
This is a pro-Israel nation."
Absent from the piece are a number of important facts. The most important of those facts is that Bill Kristol himself is on the board of ECI. He is passing off as journalism an essay endorsing the findings of an organization he helps run.
