Chris Christie - No Ordinary Liar

April 10th, 2012

When New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced he was killing the The Trans-Hudson Passenger Rail Tunnel, a project 20 years in the making, he framed as some incredibly responsible and brave decision making on his part. It represented the new, post Tea Party GOP brand. The project was wasteful and something New Jersey simply couldn't afford!

As it turns out, nearly every metric he pronounced to defend this move was a flat out lie. Ahead of a new GAO report to be released this week detailing his many falsehoods, the NY Times reports:
"Canceling the tunnel, then the largest public works project in the nation, helped shape Mr. Christie’s profile as a rising Republican star, an enforcer of fiscal discipline in a country drunk on debt. But the report is likely to revive criticism that his decision, which he said was about “hard choices” in tough economic times, was more about avoiding the need to raise the state’s gasoline tax, which would have violated a campaign promise. The governor subsequently steered $4 billion earmarked for the tunnel to the state’s near-bankrupt transportation trust fund, traditionally financed by the gasoline tax."
You see? He did do exactly what needed to be done. For himself. The congestion of physical interstate commerce the project would have alleviated extends far beyond New Jersey or New York.

Steve Benen is appalled:
"Even at the time, Christie's decision on this project in 2010 was hard to understand. Conservatives, who've become increasingly hostile towards American infrastructure improvements, cheered the move, but from a substantive perspective, the governor's decision was fairly characterized as "destructive and incredibly foolish."
But this new report casts that decision in an even more damaging light. The Government Accountability Office is a non-partisan research/audit arm of Congress, and it's reporting this week that Christie's rationale for his strange decision wasn't even true. It was a mistake to scrap a major public works project during a weak economy; it was a bigger mistake to explain the move with dishonest claims."
This is big stuff. Gov. Christie, in an act of supreme political selfishness, quite literally damaged a whole sector of the American economy. On purpose.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons the Governor thought better of entering the 2012 race for POTUS.

Gov. Christie And Epic Media Fail

Oct 5th, 2011

My thoughts on this media freak show are HERE

What Part Of "No" Does The MSM Not Understand?

Oct 5th, 2011

Some of you may remember an old Chevy Chase skit from the first season of Saturday Night Live. Week after week, Chase would announce urgently that "Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead" as the top story on that show's ground breaking news parody, Weekend Update. I was reminded of this yesterday while watching the bizarre spectacle of nearly every American media outlet as they covered the "eagerly awaited" press conference held by Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) to announce, for arguably the 100th time, that he is still not running for President.

The media had every reason to be surprised. Wait, no they didn't. As Politico highlighted last week, this may be the most consistent position from any contemporary American politician on any subject whatsoever.

Chris Christie Sucking Koch

Sept 8th, 2011

Well, the timeline is becoming clearer. It is not pretty. Via AlterNet:

"In late May, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced he was pulling his state out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, explaining that it was "not working." Now a stunning tape of a secret meeting between Christie and Charles Koch sheds light on the governor's inexplicable decision to abandon a program that was not only cutting pollution, but was funding clean energy and, as it turns out, reducing New Jersey's budget gap." EMPHASIS OURS

Any policy, even smart policy, that runs contrary to the wishes of their Koch masters seems destined for the corporatist ash heap. Chrisite is not the independent minded leader they would have us believe. He's just another Koch Sucker.

Chris Christie, Dr. Strangelove And Tax Cuts

Feb 19th, 2011

An item in today's Wall Street Journal reminded me of the scene in "Dr. Strangelove" when the Soviet ambassador refuses a non-Cuban cigar and says he won't take the products of "imperialist stooges." A general then responds "Oh... only commie stooges, eh?"

From the WSJ:
"New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a slew of tax-cutting proposals that had been championed by Democrats as job-creation legislation and were passed with bipartisan support in the state Legislature.

The Republican governor said he agreed with some of the legislation but didn't want to authorize "piecemeal" programs and promises outside of the annual state budget, which he is scheduled to propose on Tuesday.

"We cannot continue to do this type of irresponsibility in terms of budgeting," Mr. Christie said Friday."

It would seem that the only tax cuts Gov. Christie supports are those from Republican stooges.

Another Amazing Chris Christie Moment

Jan 14th, 2011

Does Gov. Chis Christie (R-NJ) have any clue how necessary municipal bonds are going to be for his state's survival over the next several years? Perhaps I should rephrase the question;

Does Gov. Christie have any idea what municipal bonds are or how investors in this particular market respond to politicians when they say stupid things?

"Yesterday we noted how a New Jersey muni bond offering was pulled just a few minutes after Chris Christie said at a town hall that healthcare costs were threatening to "bankrupt" New Jersey.

Now it's a little unclear if the connection was real. For one thing, yesterday was an ugly day in the muni market. For another thing, everybody knows that healthcare costs are a huge issue everywhere. And beyond that, people also know that words like "bankruptcy" may be a bit hyperbolic.

Still, all the talk of muni bankruptcies aren't making muni bond salesmen happy.
Bloomberg quotes head of bond trading at Deutsche Bank Private Wealth Management in New York, Gary Pollack, as saying "He is scaring some people when he says the state is going bankrupt... it wasn't timed well."

You have to feel for muni bond dealers right now: The media drumbeat is relentless about how ugly the muni situation is, and of course they're accustomed to selling munis as tax-free safe-havens, so obviously they're going to freak out when a borrower is using that kind of language, even if the causality is nonsense."

It would appear that Gov. Christie just doesn't get the interconnectedness of the issues facing New Jersey.
