Over at TPM, Josh Marshall tracks the latest GOP frontrunner's decline:
"We’re at a critical moment in the 2012 Republican primary cycle. Not only are we less than three weeks before the Iowa Caucuses. We’re also likely to find out in the next several days whether we really have a Romney-Gingrich race or whether Gingrich is yet another flash-in-the-pan whose numbers spiked and then collapsed. The bettors at Intrade have clearly made up their mind for the latter option. A few days ago, Gingrich almost overtook Romney. But tonight the odds give Romney almost a 65% shot at securing the nomination and Gingrich just under a 15% chance."
Marshall has several interactive charts marking Newt's peak and recent descent in the pools.

Perry Watch - Spectacular Spiral Edition
Oct 7th, 2011
Has it really only been two months? Kevin Drum takes stock:
"Just to recap, in less than two months Rick Perry has:
1. Suggested that maybe Ben Bernanke should be lynched.
2. Declined to back off his contention that Social Security is an unconstitutional Ponzi scheme.
3. Called climate change a "contrived phony mess" that was cooked up by scientists who have "manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling in to their projects."
4. Pissed off the conservative base by defending his decision to (in Michele Bachmann's immortal words) give "government injections" to "innocent little 12-year-old girls." Said Perry condescendingly: "What I don't get is what parents don't understand about an opt out."
5. Further pissed off the conservative base by suggesting that if you disagree with his policy on in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, "I don't think you have a heart."
6. Mangled a prepackaged debate attack on Mitt Romney so badly, and then followed up with a statement on Pakistan so inscrutable, that even his supporters started to wonder if he has a three-digit IQ.
7. Proposed that US troops should be used to fight Mexican drug lords. In Mexico.
8. Had to defend himself against revelations that his family leases a hunting spot called "Niggerhead."
I'm putting this up because you can't truly grasp the full scope of Perry's train wreck campaign unless you see the whole list in one place. It's really pretty stupendous. Has any top-tier presidential candidate in history ever imploded quite this quickly?"
Not in my recollection.

Good Morning... We're Still Screwed For No Good Reason
Aug 19th, 2011
Paul Krugman writes:
"In the past, you could make excuses on the grounds of ignorance. In the 1930s they didn’t have basic macroeconomics. Even in Japan in the 1990s you could argue that it took a long time to realize that the liquidity trap was a real possibility in the modern world.
But we came into this crisis with a pretty good understanding of what was at stake and pretty good analysis of the policy options — yet policy makers and, I’m sorry to say, many economists just chose to ignore all that and go with their prejudices instead.
And the worst of it is that the people who got this so wrong have not and probably won’t admit to their awesome wrongness; on the contrary, they’ll dig in. And the Lesser Depression will go on and on and on."
Enjoy. We have one more whole day of market exchange volatility ahead of us before the American broadcast media begins their round-table "discussions" with an entirely balanced consortium of pandering rightists.

Roubini Raises The Alarm Level
Aug 15th, 2011
Many people find Nouriel Roubini's work dry and dispassionate. You generally don't see him on television. After all, his style is more academic than political. He is certainly no hyper-partisan of the Krugman or Stiglitz mode. All that said, Roubini got a lot more attention last week than usual. In an interview with the WSJ's Simon Constable, he told it like it is in the same measured tones that have made him a less than household name.
You don't cut taxes when you go to war. The stimulus was too small. The deficit is "Bush's fault." You don't "front load" austerity in a crisis. Rather, you apply that pressure when an exit from recession is secure. Rising income inequality naturally leads to civil unrest.
However, this observation at the 5min 10sec mark sent out a shock wave:
"Karl Marx had it right. At some point, Capitalism can destroy itself. You cannot keep on shifting income from labor to Capital without having an excess capacity and a lack of aggregate demand. That's what has happened. We thought that markets worked. They're not working. The individual can be rational. The firm, to survive and thrive, can push labor costs more and more down, but labor costs are someone else's income and consumption. That's why it's a self-destructive process."
God help us. He is usually right. No one more accurately predicted the collapse of 2008.
The fact that we now have an ascendant movement in American politics which greets proven centralized monetary policy with charges of "Communism" only makes the disaster more likely.
It's all common sense... unless you are a devoted Fox viewer.
