The Real Snowden Story Isn't About The NSA. It's About China.

June 12th, 2012

The public discussion over the NSA'a massive and ongoing invasion of American privacy is essential.

It's also long overdue.

This is because not much of the information which 29 year old former intelligence contractor, Edward Snowden, has revealed is actually new.

More than seven years ago, USA Today broke the story:
"It's the largest database ever assembled in the world," said one person, who, like the others who agreed to talk about the NSA's activities, declined to be identified by name or affiliation. The agency's goal is "to create a database of every call ever made" within the nation's borders, this person added."
The fact that we now know this longstanding program is called "PRISM" and we've seen the NSA's shoddy Power Point presentation outlining its purpose doesn't change the fact that this is old news.

Some are wondering where the outrage was seven years ago when those of us who tried to raise the alarm were savaged for doing so. Nevertheless, everyone seems to care all of a sudden. Welcome to the party, kids.

Snowden has become a hero to some, a villain to others, and the discussion is turning to whether or not the NSA revelations amount to treason. I tend to think they do not.

However, Snowden didn't just leak information regarding domestic security and privacy. Using the Guardian's Glenn Greenwald as his conduit, he also managed to reveal our nation's covert strategy to counter China's massive and ongoing cyber-attacks against our nation's business and government internet servers.

Following the lead of his source, Greenwald published this classified information at precisely the time President Obama was meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. What made this all the more jaw-dropping was the publicly announced agenda for this summit.

Via Reuters:
"Meeting at the luxurious Sunnylands estate near Palm Springs in California, Obama will seek Xi's assurance that he takes seriously accusations of growing Chinese cyber spying, including snooping on advanced U.S. weapons designs.
"All nations need to abide by international norms and affirm clear rules of the road," a senior U.S. official told reporters. "That's the backdrop to the discussions that the two presidents will have."
Instead of heading into this meeting with some advantage, Snowden ensured that our President was proceeding from a position of weakness.

The China leak was of no benefit to the American people. It was utterly unrelated to domestic privacy. It had no impact on our personal freedoms. But, it sure was a victory for the People's Republic.

When Snowden outed himself two days later, he did so from a hotel in Hong Kong.

The optics aren't just shady, they're shocking.

It appears that Edward Snowden may have ginned up new interest in an old story, however serious, in order to pave the way for the release of information that dramatically damages America's foreign policy.

Today, the AP reports:
"The former CIA employee who leaked top-secret information about U.S. surveillance programs said in a new interview in Hong Kong on Wednesday that he is not attempting to hide from justice here but hopes to use the city as a base to reveal wrongdoing."
So, he intends to continue leaking covert information.

It will be very interesting to see who actually benefits from this.

PRISM is a travesty and a violation of our basic principles. It must be stopped.

But Snowden is not only no hero, he may be something much worse.

Allen West - Jingositic Coward

Jan31st, 2012

Everyone has been talking about Allen West's channeling of Joe McCarthy over the weekend. In case you somehow missed it, here's what he said:
"And we need to let President Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and my dear friend the chairman of the Democrat National Committee (Debbie Wasserman Schultz), we need to let them know Florida ain't on the table. Take your message of equality of achievement, take your message of economic dependency, take your message of enslaving the entrepreneurial will and spirit of the American people somewhere else. You can take it to Europe, you can take it to the bottom of the sea, you can take it the North Pole, but get the hell out of the United States of America." EMPHASIS OURS

Uh huh. America... "love it or leave it." Right? Provided you that "love it" the way the people that spout this kind of horseshit "love it." We've heard that before.

Well, Mr West, war criminal and general pussy, walked back and stumbled over his remarks today on Fox and CNN:
"The other thing is that I did not refer to any person leaving. If you go back and read the transcript of the message that I gave, it was about equality of achievement, it was about economic dependence, it was about enslaving the American entrepreneur’s will and spirit. That message needs to leave this country. And that was what I was referring to. And I think that anyone that sat back and looked at the entirety of that 12 minute, 45 second speech would understand that we’re talking about a contrast of visions of this country."

Here are the original remarks...

Here is the cut-between of the cowardly walk-backs he made today...

Mr West doesn't even have to the guts to stand by his own petty hatreds.

This is, of course, totally unsurprising in light of the shame he brought upon our nation by violating the trust of his service.

As for "duplicitous hypocrisy," as he calls it?

I can think of no more pointed example than his own;

Demanding that pundits still refer to him as a "lieutenant colonel" when his failure to lead and his crimes not only resulted in his own humiliating dismissal from the service but also very likely got more of our young men and women killed...

that's "duplicitous hypocrisy."

rePUBLICan ENEMY #1, part 5

Jan 7th, 2011

PREVIOUS ENTRIES: PART 1 - PART 2 - PART 3 - PART 4
Make no mistake, Rep. Darrel Issa (R-CA) is still a dishonest, manipulating thug. The far right base of the Republican party has responded to his extremism over the last 2 years by investing in him tremendous support.

With the hope that he not merely continue to articulate their ignorant rage against Barack Obama, but might now do real violence to the administration, they have helped elevate him to the highly coveted position of Chairmen of The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

It now seems that Rep. Issa may be beginning to realize that there is a vast difference between raising money from destructive corporations, racists and neo-fascists and advancing their agenda in government itself. Before the 112th Congress was even sworn in this week, he began stumbling over his past proclamations and walking back his rhetoric. He continued his shifty dance in an interview with John King over at CNN. King is to be commended. He did a bang up job taking Rep. Issa down another notch.

U.N. Looking Into Bradley Manning's Confinement

Dec 23rd, 2010

If reports are true that hero/traitor Pfc. Bradley Manning has been kept in solitary confinement for 7 months, this was bound to happen.

"HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- The United Nations' top anti-torture envoy is looking into a complaint that the Army private suspected of giving classified documents to WikiLeaks has been mistreated in custody, a spokesperson said Wednesday. The office of Manfred Nowak, special rapporteur on torture in Geneva, received a complaint from one of Pfc. Bradley Manning's supporters alleging conditions in a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., amount to torture, said spokesperson Xabier Celaya. Visitors say he spends at least 23 hours a day alone in a cell. The U.N. could ask the United States to stop any violations it finds. The Pentagon has denied mistreating Manning. A Marine Corps spokesman says the military is keeping Manning safe, secure and ready for trial."

Cantor's Candor

Nov 14th, 2010

Republican Eric Cantor has joined the ranks of John McCain and Joe Lieberman by publicly declaring to a foreign government that he will work to undermine the President of the United States in favor of that government's goals.

The government in question is Israel.

What makes Cantor's dubious behavior more interesting than that of others is the fact that he has previously described such activity as a felony violation of The Logan Act.
