Mitt Watch - Shake, Shake, Shake - Why The Etch-A-Sketch Gaffe Should End Him

Up until a couple of days ago, it had become somewhat superfluous to discuss the fact that Mitt Romney has no real positions on any issues.
This is not to say he doesn't believe in certain things.
I will concede the possibility that he might.
All this said, it is now obvious that there is something in his programming which precludes the courage of whatever convictions he might actually hold.
So used to Romney's 180 degree shifts had we become that we were beginning to dismiss the deadly seriousness his lack of character presents.
Enter the Etch-A Sketch moment. In an interview with CNN, Romney's closest campaign adviser and confidante, Eric Fehrnstrom, had this exchange with John Fugelsang:
Yes. This is as bad as it seems.
Already, this inadvertent revelation of the truth is being compared to Dukakis in the tank in 1988, George H. W. Bush's apparent fascination and previous inexperience with product scanning technology in 1992, and John Kerry's notorious stunner regarding the Iraq war in 2004.

Yes. This is as bad as it seems.

Things You Can't Make Up - Conservative Hypocrisy Edition

No one has ever accused Dick Armey of being that bright. Still, one has to wonder if his bulb is of an even lower wattage than previously suspected.
Josh Israel writes:
"FreedomWorks for America, the super PAC for former Rep. Dick Armey’s (R-TX) FreedomWorks USA, just released new radio and TV ads urging the defeat of longtime Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT). The spots are the latest in a series of attacks by the group against the six-term senator, who is facing a challenge from the right in this year’s renomination process.
The new commercials note that Hatch "voted 16 times" to raise the debt limit, allowing for $7.5 trillion of the national debt. Both ads say that it’s "time to retire" the man who "wracked up half of our nation’s debt."
The ads are available HERE and HERE.
The reason this is insane is as follows:
"Prior to joining FreedomWorks in 2003, chairman Dick Armey served nine terms in Congress. Six of those debt-limit votes took place between the time Armey was elected to the House in 1984 and his retirement at the beginning of 2003. Armey voted for at least five of those six." EMPHASIS MINE
Steve Benen is disgusted:
"Armey, a right-wing Texan, even delivered an impassioned plea to his congressional colleagues in 2002, telling them voting to raise the debt ceiling was "good for America."
Are the folks who FreedomWorks' attack ads offended by their own boss' voting record?
The larger point is that Republicans who served in Congress as recently as the Bush/Cheney era, developing reputations as consistent far-right stalwarts, are suddenly Republicans In Name Only. There's no mystery here -- as the GOP sprints past the right-wing cliff, even Dick Armey's conservative outfit no longer has any use for Republicans with Dick Armey's voting record.
The debt-ceiling issue is actually quite illustrative. As we talked about a couple of weeks ago, Mitt Romney condemned Rick Santorum for his debt-ceiling votes at an event in Ohio, while standing alongside Sen. Rob Portman (R) -- who not only voted repeatedly to raise the debt limit, but was also Bush's OMB director, demanding routine debt-ceiling increases from Congress. Indeed, most of Romney's supporters agreed with the line that all Republicans accepted for decades -- the debt limit had to be increased regularly to protect the integrity of the full faith and credit of the United States.
Former Rep. Chris Chocola (R) of Indiana cast votes to raise the debt ceiling, and now he's the president of the Club for Growth -- which condemns Republicans for voting to raise the debt ceiling."
As we have seen with nearly every policy or legislative position "conservatives'" once championed, from the personal medical mandate to cap and trade, this is just another example of the profound denial of factual reality which is coming to define their dying movement.

Even more so than previously suspected.
Writing for the American Spectator, he launches into a tirade on behalf of poor little Rush Limbaugh. He is appalled that people are appalled at Rush's appalling behavior. Get this:
"It's time to stand up to the bullies.
It's time to Rally for Rush." EMPHASIS MINE
He actually wrote this. I shit you not.

I really am not making this up. It's not from the Onion.

Santorum Watch - Home Schooling Edition

When I noted yesterday that the least insane of Rick Santorum's statements recently was his assault on public schools, I was unaware of an interesting (and unsurprising) piece of information.
Stephen D. Foster writes:
"Rick Santorum has been very vocal about his preference for home schooling. There’s a reason for this of course. He holds a grudge. Santorum enrolled his children in the Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School and stuck the taxpayers for 80% of the costs which were paid through the Penn Hills School District. In November 2004, Penn Hills asked Santorum to repay $67,000 in tuition costs because he and his family were spending most of the year in Virginia and did not meet the qualifications for residency status. So Santorum pulled his kids out of school and has home schooled them ever since. If parents are supposed to be responsible for teaching their own kids, how come Santorum wasn’t home schooling his children before 2004?"
Santorum is a hypocrite of a very rare breed.

An incredibly ugly thing happened yesterday in America. I am not explicitly referring to the discovery of "magic votes" that were previously uncounted due to "human error" in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. That is a factor in what disturbs me, to be sure. More troubling than this potential impropriety is that the previous day's media cycle began with a coordinated series of attacks
throughout the usual conservative outlets making baseless claims of "potential fraud" by Democrats in the race. At that time, it looked like the liberal was winning.
This is the modern, post-election playbook for the American Right. If they win, even by the slimmest of margins, it is called a "mandate." Ah, but if they lose, well then they goose step to their laptops and TV cameras and imply illegitimacy. It is red meat for those who believe that Americans with whom they disagree are, well, not really American.
Prominent right wing commentator and activist John Fund fired the first shot in Wednesday's WSJ. He laid the usual groundwork for mistrust and it was widely linked to by organizations like FOX.
Some selections from his agit-prop:
"Any recount will be scrutinized for irregularities and possible vote fraud. A recount in a similarly close race in neighboring Minnesota's 2008 U.S. Senate race stretched on for months, amid charges that some counties counted absentee ballots according to different standards than others did. Al Franken, the Democrat, was eventually sworn in after pulling ahead by 315 votes. His victory gave—for a time—Senate Democrats the critical 60th vote they needed to pass ObamaCare over a potential filibuster."

Chris Christie, Dr. Strangelove And Tax Cuts

An item in today's Wall Street Journal reminded me of the scene in "Dr. Strangelove" when the Soviet ambassador refuses a non-Cuban cigar and says he won't take the products of "imperialist stooges." A general then responds "Oh... only commie stooges, eh?"

"New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a slew of tax-cutting proposals that had been championed by Democrats as job-creation legislation and were passed with bipartisan support in the state Legislature.
The Republican governor said he agreed with some of the legislation but didn't want to authorize "piecemeal" programs and promises outside of the annual state budget, which he is scheduled to propose on Tuesday.
"We cannot continue to do this type of irresponsibility in terms of budgeting," Mr. Christie said Friday."
It would seem that the only tax cuts Gov. Christie supports are those from Republican stooges.

The New York-based watchdog's claims come a week after the Los Angeles Times reported some detainees at a prison in the Iraqi capital's heavily fortified Green Zone had been abused and held without charge for up to two years, charges Baghdad denies."

In a report today from The Daily Caller comes the news that some of the more prominent Tea Party activists are gearing up their opposition to President Obama's appointment of General Electric CEO Jeffery Immelt as head of his new Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

"According to a press release, FreedomWorks and the Free Enterprise Project – the two groups pushing the campaign – believe Immelt’s appointment is a sign that more favors will be traded between the White House and GE.
"It’s time to break up the unethical romance between government and big business,” said Freedom Works President Matt Kibbe in a statement. “For too long, corporate elites have lobbied to profit from the size and growth of government at the expense of hard-working Americans."
Continued ignorance of the fact that Freedom Works was formed as a shill for just those purposes seems to be a characteristic Mr. Kibbe is counting on from his followers. Indeed, the vast majority of Tea Partiers seem blissfully content to chew their red meat without asking from where it comes. Perhaps they should listen to one of their own.
The radical Constitutional revisionist and freshman Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) put it succinctly at a post election Freedom Works sponsored "retreat" last November. "There is nothing FreedomWorks stands for that hasn't been lockstep with what the Republican Party stands for" he said.

Make no mistake, Rep. Darrel Issa (R-CA) is still a dishonest, manipulating thug. The far right base of the Republican party has responded to his extremism over the last 2 years by investing in him tremendous support.
With the hope that he not merely continue to articulate their ignorant rage against Barack Obama, but might now do real violence to the administration, they have helped elevate him to the highly coveted position of Chairmen of The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
It now seems that Rep. Issa may be beginning to realize that there is a vast difference between raising money from destructive corporations, racists and neo-fascists and advancing their agenda in government itself. Before the 112th Congress was even sworn in this week, he began stumbling over his past proclamations and walking back his rhetoric. He continued his shifty dance in an interview with John King over at CNN. King is to be commended. He did a bang up job taking Rep. Issa down another notch.

The saga of Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) keeps getting better. He has just announced his list of investigative targets. Topping the list is Fannie Mae.
You see, Issa is one of those Republicans who thinks that we should lay the blame for the real estate meltdown at the feet of lower middle class families. How DARE they not understand the arcane language of elaborate, misleading and sometimes even criminal bank documents?
The thing is, he voted to repeal Glass-Steagall in 1999 paving the way for the mess. Then, in 2007, he voted AGAINST stricter regulation of the sub-prime lending market.
Perhaps he could simply point the finger at himself, apologize and fucking resign.
I encourage you to call this low-life motherfucker and tell him that you are now aware that he is a low-life motherfucker. Really.
