Headline Of The Year Nominee

June 9th, 2012

Sometimes, the interwebs really do make the world a better place...
Via Yahoo:

"A highway truck accident never sounded so delicious. A semitrailer hauling Hungry Jack pancake syrup collided with a highway median at the Buttermilk Pike overpass in northern Kentucky, causing the truckload of syrup to spill all over the highway.

"Every lane of southbound I-75 was covered in pancake syrup," Fort Mitchell Police Officer Mark Spanyer told the Kentucky Enquirer. "It was a royal pain in the butt."

H/T to Charles for this one.

Mitt Watch: He Couldn't Hire A Proofreader? cont...

May 30th, 2012

Seriously. For a candidate who just attempted a pivot to education issues, this is unreal.

Gizmodo reports:

"Mitt Romney's new iPhone app, With Mitt, "lets you customize photos with a variety of Mitt-inspired artistic frames." Slogans like "Believe in America," "Obama Isn't Working," and "I'm a Mom for Mitt" are just a few of the Mitt-tastic phrases that can be slapped on your iPhone photos, proudly pronouncing your support of the GOP candidate.

If only he was equally as concerned with supporting our great nation. Much to the delighted displeasure of Twitter, one particular frame option betrays Romney's secret agenda working toward bettering a place known as Amercia."

Mitt Watch: The Replicant Nominee

April 23rd, 2012

I am not alone in the opinion that Mittens Romney is more than a little odd. Alex Pareene cuts to the chase:
"Mitt Romney is weird. When the Obama reelection campaign early in the cycle made the mistake of indicating that its strategy would be to imply that Mitt Romney is weird by repeatedly telling Politico that it planned on calling Mitt Romney weird, Romney’s camp countered by causing a brief and not particularly sincere media brouhaha over whether “weird” is code for “Mormon.” Plenty of Americans think Mormons are weird, yes, but in this case, the simple fact is Mitt Romney is weird, entirely apart from his religion."
Some are calling this bit of honest commentary from Pareene one step "over the line." Nonsense. He still understates the situation. We're dealing with a creature right out of Philip K. Dick. He might be Nexus 6, but he's not entirely "human."
"He seems incapable of natural conversation and frequently uncomfortable in his own skin. He’s simultaneously dorkily earnest and ingratiatingly insincere. He suggests a brilliantly designed politician android with an operating system still clearly in beta. He once tied a dog to the roof of his car and drove for hundreds of miles without stopping and some years later thought that was an endearing story. All video of him attempting to interact with normal humans is cringe-inducing, as a cursory YouTube search quickly demonstrates. (Martin Luther King Day, Jacksonville, Fla., 2008:  Mitt poses for a picture with some cheerful young parade attendees. As he squeezes in to the otherwise all-black group, he says, apropros of nothing, “Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof!”) He seems to have been told that “small talk” is mostly made up of cheerfully delivered non sequiturs."
Electing the first African American President was a great thing.

Sadly, I don't believe the nation is ready for its first Replicant Commander in Chief.

Quote Of The Day - Here and Now Edition

March 9th, 2012

"People think I've got this job as a leader. They don't realize that I have about 200 responsibilities and roles. I've gotta be the big brother, the father, I gotta be the disciplinarian, the dean of students, the principal, the spouse—you can't believe all the roles that I have to play! But one of them is, you know, some problems you can nip early... It's just a slice of America, it really is. We got some of the smartest people in the country who serve here, and some of the dumbest. We got some of the best people you'd ever meet, and some of the raunchiest. We've got 'em all."

-- Speaker of the House John Boehner showing some signs of career fatigue.

Is Jeffrey Lord Really This Dense?

March 5th, 2012

The answer to the question is, apparently, yes.

Even more so than previously suspected.

Writing for the American Spectator, he launches into a tirade on behalf of poor little Rush Limbaugh. He is appalled that people are appalled at Rush's appalling behavior. Get this:

"It's time to stand up to the bullies.

It's time to Rally for Rush."
EMPHASIS MINE

He actually wrote this. I shit you not.

Please "enjoy" his whole piece wherein he repeats the smear that Ms. Fluke "demands to be paid for her sex life," refers to those of us who have fought back as "the blacklisting crowd" emerging from our "Stalinist caves" (that mixed metaphor is rich,) and repeatedly berates the young woman "for her obnoxiously intolerant behavior when it comes to the free speech of others."

I really am not making this up. It's not from the Onion.

So, all you "Stalinist" loons, put your "blacklisting" hats on and let him know how sorry you are at jlpa1@aol.com

Mitt Romney's Empathy Problem, cont...

Feb 3rd, 2012
by F. Grey Parker

The fallout from Wednesday's gaffe continues to mount... particularly on the right.

As I noted shortly after this blew up, Romney seemed not only detached from the common citizen but also from his own party.

A growing chorus of conservative voices is afraid that Romney's pronouncements about "the very poor" are a sign that he's exactly the kind of "Massachusetts Liberal" Newt has been portraying for weeks.

Some of them are also saying, flat out, that Mitt's just an idiot.

Newt Watch - Not EVERY Location Is A "Photo-Op"

Jan 12th, 2012

Beating all previous entries for a potential "Holy Shit, What The Fuck Was Newt Gingrich Thinking," award, comes this stunner via Vanity Fair. This is a professional photograph, posed and shot intentionally and provided to the magazine via Gingrich Productions. I am not trying to use this as bait on any supposed grounds of anti-Semitism.

I don't believe that is what is at play, here.

However, I am wondering if this might not be evidence of a purer sociopathology than I had previously suspected given his obvious narcissism. Think about it... would you smile for your official photographer in front of the gates of World War Two's most notorious DEATH CAMP?!

Today in WTF?

Dec27th, 2011

What you are about to see is, apparently, an actual, genuine, we-are-not-making-this up, trailer for a real movie in post-production or just ahead of release right now.

Psst... the first "teaser" trailer is all about the pigeon.

This is nuts...

I honestly don't know what to make of this... that said, this is either the most clever and brilliant reworking of Rocky II ever made or evidence that any group of sick maniacs can get a movie made if they want it badly enough.

It's got Udo Keir... It could plausibly be alternatively titled, "Earth Vs. The Nazi Flying Saucers."

I am not sure whether to throw up or giggle at such hubris.

Note To Sandusky's Lawyer...

Dec 13th, 2011

One should try not to be overly glib. Deadspin reports:

"Joe Amendola, the attorney for Jerry Sandusky who thus far has been lawyerin' like a man who got his J.D. from the bottom of a cereal box, did some more lawyerin' in front of the cameras this morning. The choicest moment: At one point, Amendola discussed the possibility that Mike McQueary witnessed a rape, told Joe Paterno and two university administrators, and no one did anything except tell Sandusky to stay out of the locker room with kids. To anyone who believes that version of events, Amendola said, "I suggest you dial 1-800-REALITY ." We did. Here's what we got:
Hey guys, welcome to the hottest place for triple-X action. Get ready for bulging, bursting pleasure with horny gay, bi, and bi-curious studs. Just 99 cents per minute.
Seriously. Call it yourself."

Look, it's 2011. Damn near every web domain, phone number and simple e-mail address is taken. Never assume.

Burger King Is So Cool

Dec 11 th, 2011

Well, you don't see ads like this everyday. Gawker (surprise) has stumbled on a Russian Burger King ad that is boggling. Lane Moore writes:

"Hipster rockabilly girls? Check. Getting tattooed in a fast food restaurant? Check. Fire breathing? Check. Guy djing with hamburgers instead of records while ballerinas dance around fireballs? Yep.

Is this a dream you had after eating some iffy leftovers? Nope. It's a Russian Burger King commercial. And that's all you need know for it to make "sense."

Personally, I would have at least mentioned the random shot of the guy whose shoes are on fire...

A Little Liberal Catharsis

Nov 19th, 2011

Hello liberal friends and, well, everyone from Sullivan to Frum to Bartlett, etc... Feeling down? The insane machinations of a mouthbreathing American Republican Party have you in fits? Well, here's your moment to bask in a little cathartic it-could-be-worse-type-stuff. The European Union, that forward thinking body, has struck a blow against corporate speech... there's just one hitch...

Actual headline from a real place in the "civilized West"

Via The Telegraph:

"EU officials concluded that, following a three-year investigation, there was no evidence to prove the previously undisputed fact.

Producers of bottled water are now forbidden by law from making the claim and will face a two-year jail sentence if they defy the edict, which comes into force in the UK next month.

Last night, critics claimed the EU was at odds with both science and common sense. Conservative MEP Roger Helmer said: "This is stupidity writ large.

"The euro is burning, the EU is falling apart and yet here they are: highly-paid, highly-pensioned officials worrying about the obvious qualities of water and trying to deny us the right to say what is patently true.

"If ever there were an episode which demonstrates the folly of the great European project then this is it."

We shit you not. Water, as officially designated by the EU, does not, repeat, does not prevent dehydration. Sleep tight.

Next on their docket? Gravity, the pernicious rumor that things "fall."

Perry Watch - WTF Happened In New Hampshire?

Oct 31, 2011

Gov Rick Perry's recent appearance in Manchester, New Hampshire has raised more than a few eyebrows. I am not the only one who thinks he was seriously intoxicated. It's the only plausible explanation.
