Again, one of my conservative heroes steps up to the plate. He also hits it out of the park.
Regarding Rush's phony "apology," David Frum gives what may be the most dignified smackdown in recent political history.
He has four points over at CNN regarding the Limbaugh/Fluke spectacle that all ring true:
"Point 1: Even by the rough standards of cable/talk radio/digital talk, Limbaugh's verbal abuse of Sandra Fluke set a new kind of low. I can't recall anything as brutal, ugly and deliberate ever being said by such a prominent person and so emphatically repeated. This was not a case of a bad "word choice." It was a brutally sexualized accusation, against a specific person, prolonged over three days.

Well. Apparently poor, little Rush is quite saddened that no one fell for his "apology."
He took to the air today to tell everyone that he really, really, honest to goodness meant it.
Really.
But, being the slop-swilling propagandist, egomaniac and narcissistic fiend that he is, he had to explain that his real transgression last week was, in the words of Politico's MJ Lee, "stooping down to the level of Democrats in discussing the issue of contraception coverage."
Uh huh. Right. It's really the fault of the left that he couldn't contain himself. So much for the party of "personal responsibility."
You know? "Slut" and "prostitute?"
That just leaves the other fifty individual smears upon Sandra Fluke's character and humanity he has yet to address. Yeah, some folks are counting.
Also, when you follow an apology with a "but?" It's not an apology.
The sponsors continue to flee and the pressure isn't letting up. Nor should it. With any luck, this is the beginning of the end for his vicious, over-ripe festival of lies.
One more time, remember how this all started:

Writing for the American Spectator, he launches into a tirade on behalf of poor little Rush Limbaugh. He is appalled that people are appalled at Rush's appalling behavior. Get this:
"It's time to stand up to the bullies.
It's time to Rally for Rush." EMPHASIS MINE
He actually wrote this. I shit you not.

George Will made quite a few waves yesterday.

"Conservative columnist George Will on Sunday tore into top Republicans for their tepid response to Rush Limbaugh's smear of Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, declaring that the GOP is "afraid" of the right-wing radio host.
"It would've been nice if they had shared that with the larger public, the Republican leaders," Will said on ABC's This Week. "Instead, Mr. Boehner comes out and says, Rush's language was inappropriate. Using a salad fork for your entree, that's inappropriate. Not this stuff. I mean, and Rick Santorum says well, what he says was absurd, but an entertainer is allowed to be absurd. No. It is the responsibility of conservatives to police the right in its excesses, just as the liberals unfailingly fail to police the excesses in their own side. And it was depressing, because what it indicates is that the Republican leaders are afraid of Rush Limbaugh. They want to bomb Iran, but they're afraid of Rush Limbaugh." EMPHASES MINE
This statement, coming on the heels of Will's message to the GOP that they really ought to just give up on retaking the White House, prompted a predictably ridiculous response from Fox and Friends this morning. In a piece of stagecraft worthy of Mel Brooks, the Fox stooges gave Donald Trump the chance to attack the conservative stalwart.
Nando Di Fino writes for Mediaite:
"I think he’s a totally overrated fool," Trump said. "I think this guy is so overrated. I don’t think he’s very smart. He looks smart with the little glasses and the hair slicked to the side."
"You’ve criticized him before on this show," host Gretchen Carlson said, "You’re not holding back on what you think about him today."
"He’s a hack," Trump said. "He’s a hack. And how he can say that is just incredible."
I'm not sure how they are going to top this one. Perhaps they can have Chuck Norris or Ted Nugent attack Thomas Sowell the next time he writes something reasonable.

How Rush's Slut-Shaming Is Actually Injuring People

An ordinary American mother writes that her 16 year old daughter "suffers from menorrhagia and secondary dysmenorrhea. That is, since almost the time of her very first period, she bled so heavily and suffered such severe pain and cramping that she was rendered immobile for the first 2-3 days of menstruation. She would become so violently ill that she would miss at least 2 days of school each month."
For this reason, her daughter is prescribed hormonal treatments. Yes, the pill.
What follows is a harrowing account of the abuse her daughter is now receiving from classmates and, apparently, possibly even a teacher. All of this is being justified by her tormentors with phrases like these:
"Birth control whore"
"I told my mom you were on the pill and she said you were nothing but a little tramp"
"My mom said some guy she listens to on the radio was just talking about girls like you- he even said you were a slut!"
"Yeah, my mom said the same thing, said it's about time people spoke up and weren't afraid to tell the truth"
Apparently, these classmates discovered the young woman was on "contraception" because of an extended school trip which required prescription disclosure to the institution before being allowed to participate. It is not clear how the information was disseminated to them. What is clear is where they have found encouragement for their mouth-breathing, spittle-dribbled harassment.
This is the world as Rush Limbaugh would have it in microcosm. For women, there are two choices only:
Shame or agony.

It's been a hell of a day in the world of "slut shaming." A hell of a day, indeed. In case you haven't heard yet, Rush Limbaugh savagely attacked Sandra Fluke, the young woman whom House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) refused to allow to testify during his all-male-witness contraception hearing two weeks ago:
"What does it say about the college coed Susan [sic] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex? What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex.
"She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We're the pimps.
"The johns, that's right. We would be the johns -- no! We're not the johns. Well -- yeah, that's right. Pimp's not the right word.
"OK, so, she's not a slut. She's round-heeled. I take it back." EMPHASIS MINE

In case you are wondering what set Rush off, Ms. Fluke managed to get her voice heard in a separate hearing held by the The Democratic Steering & Policy Committee. Although House Republicans managed to intentionally prevent her appearance from being broadcast, it wound up being seen by a lot of people anyway. You know how that pesky internet is.
This woman not being effectively silenced altogether was too much for Rush to bear.
Of particular note is his remark today about the quantity of sex a person engages in having anything to do with "contraception."
Beyond a refusal to recognize the fact that a majority of women use "contraception" as an essential component of health-preserving hormone therapies (such as the one related in Ms. Fluke's testimony), this exposes the psyche of the contemporary, self-declared conservative male...
"Behold, the most influential voice in Republican politics.
I'm curious whether GOP officials, including Darrell Issa, are comfortable with the language Limbaugh used today. If recent history is any guide, Republican officeholders are loath to disagree with the radio host publicly, and it'll be interesting to see if GOP lawmakers or candidates make any kind of exception here.
Given that they started this War on Women, it seems unlikely, but here's hoping I'm wrong."

Believe it or not, the day got even more depressing.
The National Review published a "hilarious" piece by Charles C. W. Cooke showing just how stupid we liberals are and 'exposing' the fact that access to birth control is a phony issue. His piece, titled "My Contraceptive Haul," (yuk yuk) details how easy it was for him to find condoms simply everywhere in NY City.
They are speaking for millions of Americans who think that women shouldn't be speaking on this subject at all.

Considering the conservative establishment's race to double down on their defense of Herman Cain after today's explosive revelations, one needs to wonder whether, perhaps, the GOP front-runner might not actually be doing even better had he actually raped someone.
The only accuser to come forward publicly, Sharon Bialek, is a lifelong Republican and a Tea Party supporter. Not good enough. For those in the GOP elite who have been so desperate to, as Ann Coulter notably intoned, prove that their "blacks are better," any allegation against Cain must be met with a savage response. Its veracity is of no consequence. After all, the GOP was just on the verge of showing us all how open minded they are.
We'd already listened, this afternoon, to the world's foremost overweight, balding, multi-millionaire liar and doctor-shopping, pill-popping drug-fiend as he lowered himself to previously unsuspected depths. We'd also heard that slicked back little GOP-pimp and Nerf-football-enthusiast they call Sean Hannity dismiss the allegations with a big 'so what.'
I genuinely thought it could not get much worse. Silly me. I was wrong. There was still plenty of broadcast day left.
The sputtering shit-bag known as Dick Morris charged onto the Murdoch Device to smear Cain accuser Sharon Bialek further. She's a "gold digger." She "wants money." She wants "a book, a movie, a film deal, a spread in Playboy, who knows?" By the way, Morris went out of his way to make sure Fox viewers knew that Ms. Bialek has "an out of wedlock child."
That bit, in particular, is as venomous as anything I have ever heard. The GOP, the ban-abortion-and-even-contraception party, is now sending its media heavyweights to use Ms. Bialek's embrace of the challenge of single motherhood, rather than choosing to terminate her pregnancy, against her.
Hannity couldn't resist the chance to outdo his afternoon antics. The graphic behind his introduction to footage of this afternoon's presser reads "Anatomy Of A Smear Campaign."
Morris apparently stuck around the vermin-ridden filth that is Fox studios to get a chance to repeat his "Playboy spread" slur. Hannity made sure to plug Morris' children's book at the top of the segment. I shit you not. Again, Morris says "this woman is in search of money."
As I said to a colleague earlier, after all the years that the GOP paraded and manipulated the case of Paula Jones in an attempt to teach us how much "character matters," this propaganda is beyond reason.
The institutionalization of situational ethics is now more damning for the GOP than anything of which Cain is accused.
Remember, women of the GOP, it's not good enough for you to prove your pro-life position through action, vote with your party and also act on behalf of your party's causes. You have to let the men around you do and say whatever they want, whenever they want, no matter how disgusting it may be.
After all, baby, you really are only good for "a Playboy spread" if they turn on you.

Warren Is Scaring The Hell Out Of The GOP

"Washington Is Rigged." So said Elizabeth Warren last week in announcing her bid for the Massachusetts senate seat now held by Scott Brown.
Well, she certainly has already caused a stir. Robert Kuttner notes:
"Elizabeth Warren’s surprise lead in Massachusetts polls only days after she got into the Senate race to oust Republican Scott Brown has thrown GOP operatives off balance.
Their first storyline was that Warren was either a creature of the Beltway or a pointy-headed Harvard professor. Neither seems to be sticking.
On Tuesday, when the Democratic-affiliated polling firm, Public Policy Polling, reported Warren narrowly leading Brown, 46 to 44 among likely voters, Brown spokesman Colin Reed put out a statement contending that "we have always known that Scott would be the underdog against whichever candidate wins the Democratic primary next September."
But this past summer, before Warren enjoyed decent name recognition, Republicans were touting early polls showing Brown leading Warren 53-28, and declaring him a winner."
The establishment GOP is scrambling. Scott Wong and John Bresnahan carried some of their water in a borderline hit-piece over at Politico yesterday. The article casts doubt on Warren's integrity by alleging a "lack of transparency" during her tenure as the head of the Congressional Oversight Panel which controlled TARP. Wong and Bresnahan should be ashamed. The fact that the panel adhered to all of the requirements placed upon it by congress and that congress has all of the information she is portrayed as having kept from the public is spun to the margins. It's not on a website for the masses, you see.
One wonders if the Wong/Bresnahan piece hadn't been ghost-written by longtime foe, Rep Patrick McHenry (R-NC).
This week also saw the GOP's fear of Warren exposed elsewhere in the form of some truly frantic antics, as Julie Ryan Evans points out:
"When it comes to politics, we've seen so many crazy moves and outrageous tactics, we're almost numb to them, but I have to say I'm shocked by the Massachusetts Republican Party's latest attack. They are demanding that Harvard University stop paying Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren her salary for doing her job as a professor there.
Their reasoning, according to the Boston Globe: It sends a message that Ivy League schools support Democratic candidates. Can you say desperate?
The salary is in exchange for her services to the university. She will certainly be busy campaigning, but lots of professors have outside employment. "Washington Is Rigged." So said Elizabeth Warren last week in announcing her bid for the Massachusetts senate seat now held by Scott Brown.
Well, she certainly has already caused a stir. Robert Kuttner notes:
"Elizabeth Warren’s surprise lead in Massachusetts polls only days after she got into the Senate race to oust Republican Scott Brown has thrown GOP operatives off balance.
Their first storyline was that Warren was either a creature of the Beltway or a pointy-headed Harvard professor. Neither seems to be sticking.
On Tuesday, when the Democratic-affiliated polling firm, Public Policy Polling, reported Warren narrowly leading Brown, 46 to 44 among likely voters, Brown spokesman Colin Reed put out a statement contending that "we have always known that Scott would be the underdog against whichever candidate wins the Democratic primary next September."
But this past summer, before Warren enjoyed decent name recognition, Republicans were touting early polls showing Brown leading Warren 53-28, and declaring him a winner."
The establishment GOP is scrambling. Scott Wong and John Bresnahan carried some of their water in a borderline hit-piece over at Politico yesterday. The article casts doubt on Warren's integrity by alleging a "lack of transparency" during her tenure as the head of the Congressional Oversight Panel which controlled TARP. Wong and Bresnahan should be ashamed. The fact that the panel adhered to all of the requirements placed upon it by congress and that congress has all of the information she is portrayed as having kept from the public is spun to the margins. It's not on a website for the masses, you see.
One wonders if the Wong/Bresnahan piece hadn't been ghost-written by longtime foe, Rep Patrick McHenry (R-NC).
This week also saw the GOP's fear of Warren exposed elsewhere in the form of some truly frantic antics, as Julie Ryan Evans points out:
"When it comes to politics, we've seen so many crazy moves and outrageous tactics, we're almost numb to them, but I have to say I'm shocked by the Massachusetts Republican Party's latest attack. They are demanding that Harvard University stop paying Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren her salary for doing her job as a professor there.
Their reasoning, according to the Boston Globe: It sends a message that Ivy League schools support Democratic candidates. Can you say desperate?
The salary is in exchange for her services to the university. She will certainly be busy campaigning, but lots of professors have outside employment. She will still be expected to fulfill her obligations to Harvard, and the salary is just in exchange for those obligations, not to fund her campaign."
They don't have much to work with. That fact leads me to expect new lows in both ugliness and innuendo as the campaign heats up.
Quite coincidentally, I am sure, Rush Limbaugh found it necessary today to breathlessly warn his listeners that Elizabeth Warren is a "parasite." One might surmise from this that the Kochs are now involved.

Good News... Again

The ratings for some of the most dishonest right wing propagandists continue to show evidence of freefall. I noted last month what is arguably the under-reported story of the year, that Fox News' ratings are in a devastating decline. It gets better. A lot better.
From Business Insider:
"The just-released Arbitron report reveals that a lot less people are listening to right-wing talk radio.
With a lull in ratings since November, Rush Limbaugh had a 3.0 share of listeners for his radio time slot, which is a 33% slide from October and from last April, reports Crain's Business.
Meanwhile, The Sean Hannity Show was reported to be down 28% from its peak numbers in the fall."

This does beg a few questions. Where is the shake-up? You know? Where is the evidence that they have been approached by management and are attempting to retool their programs for better market share?

On Monday during his radio program, Limbaugh talked about the call he received from Boehner. Limbaugh's support of the plan would be advantageous to Republicans because it might help rally the conservative base."
At what point did it become anything less than a cause for broad public outrage to formally loop in a bomb throwing media personality on actual legislation before the rest of our representative government?
