Frum's Bullshit-Detector is pinned

Again, one of my conservative heroes steps up to the plate. He also hits it out of the park.

Regarding Rush's phony "apology," David Frum gives what may be the most dignified smackdown in recent political history.

He has four points over at CNN regarding the Limbaugh/Fluke spectacle that all ring true:

"Point 1: Even by the rough standards of cable/talk radio/digital talk, Limbaugh's verbal abuse of Sandra Fluke set a new kind of low. I can't recall anything as brutal, ugly and deliberate ever being said by such a prominent person and so emphatically repeated. This was not a case of a bad "word choice." It was a brutally sexualized accusation, against a specific person, prolonged over three days.

In response to the vile campaign urging JC Penney to drop Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson simply because she is gay, an effort which even Bill O'Reilly likened to McCarthyism, CEO Ron Johnson has made a statement affirming the company's loyalty to her:

"We stand squarely behind Ellen as our spokesperson and that’s a great thing, because she shares the same values that we do in our company. Our company was founded 110 years ago on The Golden Rule, which is about treating people fair and square, just like if you treated yourself. And we think Ellen represents the values of our company and the values that we share."

Frank Gaffney's Hypocrisy

Calls for West Point to uninvite Frank Gaffney's buddy and fellow spittle-dribbling, anti-Muslim hate-monger Jerry Boykin from an upcoming prayer event have prompted Mr Gaffney to wrap himself in the famous words of Martin Niemöller. We are not making this up..

Right Wing Watch reminds us just why this is serious bullshit:

"Last year, Gaffney demanded that the American Conservative Union disinvite Suhail Kahn of Muslims for America from the Conservative Political Action Conference. He also called on CPAC to give the boot to Grover Norquist, who has done advocacy work in the past with Muslim-Americans including Kahn, labeling both of them threats to the conservative movement and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. Moreover, Liberty Counsel’s Awakening 2011 conference, Gaffney condemned the conference for allowing Norquist to speak there and said that he made it his “personal burden for the past twelve years” to warn conservatives against joining with Norquist, saying, “I must tell you I think this is time to bring it to a stop."

You have to admit, disconnect this wide is impressive.

It's also worth noting that Mr Gaffney, a self-declared "patriot" who was too busy to ever serve his country, is opposed by thousands who actually have on this one.

I have to admit that I'm surprised I didn't see this coming sooner. Remember when Glenn Beck accused the President of "indoctrination" for giving a back-to-school speech to America's children?


Beck likened Barack Obama to Mussolini at the time. How could he not draw such a frightening comparison when the President's speech was riddled with such overtly partisan messages as this one?

It seems like I tip my hat in this matter every few months or so to Megyn Kelly. She definitely earned this one. Dr. Keith Ablow, anti-LGBT zealot and fellow Fox personality, was arguing his case for a boycott of Dancing With The Stars over Chaz Bono's participation. His position? Young viewers could suddenly turn into, well, Chaz Bono. After doing everything in her power to remain gracious, Kelly had finally had enough of his nonsense. The money quotes:

"How many kids turned gay from watching Will and Grace?"

"There’s so much hate for gays, and lesbians, and transgender people, the thing is, Doc, you seem to be adding to the hate."

In the heady days which followed the Christianist assault on a gathering of youngsters at a youth-in-government Summer camp in Norway, there was a staggering movement by America's rightist Islamophobes to deflect blame.

Any potential blame. So many ugly and misguided articles were published that it was simply stunning.

Nothing, however, was as convoluted as a piece which Dana Loesch posted over at Andy's Joint.

You see, it wasn't enough for Dana to join the right wing chorus of those saying the killer "was not really a Christian." It wasn't enough for Dana to deny that venomous right wing pronouncements might actually have had a real world impact on a warped mind. It wasn't even enough for her to simply get behind all the circled wagons amongst her fellow rightists and make self-serving claims of "censorship" and conservative "victimhood" to avoid a discussion about the power of rhetoric.

Tucker Carlson likes to pretend he's a journalist. Which would be amusing if he weren't taken as seriously as he is. The latest exploitation of the "Weinergate" debacle is an attempt to tarnish MSNBC's Rachel Maddow. Here's the "story:"

After publishing a love-link to Andy which includes video of Breitbart gleefully showing his cameraphone-pic of Weiner's actual naked weener (allegedly), Carlson began a series of near breathless "UPDATES." It would seem that Tuck was trying to re-cast the net, so to speak. Why just continue to humiliate Weiner when you can also attack the most prominent LGBT commentator in America, Rachel Maddow?

The first "UPDATE" involving Maddow sought merely to embarrass her.

Following the chorus of racist hate that greeted yesterday's POTUS presser, I really didn't think anything could make me more ashamed of the current American climate. I was wrong. This morning, DailyKos introduced me to Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern.



Here is a sampling of her views on minorities:

"We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them."

Wyoming Doesn't Want You... Or You... Or You...

When The Daily Beast rated Wyoming as "the least tolerant state" last week I checked out what they had to say. Their methodology, however detailed, still ultimately relied on a narrow set of metrics. Ironically, last year they were also rated the "best run state” by 24/7 Wall St using very different criteria.

I am more inclined to side with the former rather than the latter in light of this afternoon's events. The Star-Tribune reports today:

"The Wyoming House passed legislation Monday to stop recognition of out-of-state gay marriages and civil unions.

House Bill 74 now heads to the Senate, where its chances for passage appear good.

State Rep. Owen Petersen, R-Mountain View, the bill's sponsor, said the legislation is needed to resolve a conflict in Wyoming law, which defines marriage as a contract "between a male and a female person" but also recognizes any valid marriage performed outside the state. Other supporters have said the bill will help to hold back government intrusion into Wyoming traditions and culture.

Opponents said the bill is unnecessary, violates the rights of gays and lesbians to marry, and would create havoc for legally married out-of-state gay couples traveling in Wyoming." Emphasis mine

Following the DB rating so closely, the timing of the Wyoming state legislature's actions is amazing. Equally stunning is the implication that something being left to “the states” just isn't good enough for these Tea Party driven folks. So much for that meme.

One last observation: It's also wildly stupid. The second highest source of revenue for Wyoming is tourism. Hmmm.

Why risk this? After the 40 year journey since Stonewall, does any LGBT couple really want to chance so much as even passing through this state? 

From where I sit, just outside Chicago, there are an awful lot of ways to get to San Francisco, L.A., Portland or Seattle and vice-versa that don't go through Wyoming. Plan accordingly.

"We learn that the right doesn't even recognize the irony of its claim of being unfairly blamed for the violence of others, when it has spent the last several years doing exactly that to Muslims -- particularly American Muslims. We also learn that the right can simultaneously insist no political party or inclination can be blamed for Tucson -- while it itself blames the Democratic party and the left, for Tucson."
