Romney Watch - Et Tu, Mittens?

Feb 22nd, 2012
by F. Grey Parker

Barry Goldwater once said,
"Religious factions will go on imposing their will on others unless the decent people connected to them recognize that religion has no place in public policy. They must learn to make their views known without trying to make their views the only alternatives."
My. How things have changed.

There was a time when I had some regard for Mitt Romney. He once seemed contemplative and fair. There is plenty in his record to respect no matter how much he's running from it lately.

But that's just it... he's really running from it. What's more, what he is running to is un-American.

A few months ago, he was not just the GOP elite establishment's choice. He also seemed the smart choice. Not anymore.

I believe that yesterday, Romney not only sealed the fate of his campaign but also that of his party.

HuffPo reports:

"Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Tuesday that President Barack Obama's administration has "fought against religion" and sought to substitute a "secular" agenda for one grounded in faith.

Obama's campaign seized on the characterization, calling Romney's comments "disgraceful."

Romney rarely ventures into social issues in his campaign speeches, but people participating in a town hall-style meeting one week before the Michigan primary asked how he would protect religious liberty.

"Unfortunately, possibly because of the people the president hangs around with, and their agenda, their secular agenda – they have fought against religion," Romney said." EMPHASES MINE

With all due respect to Mr. Romney (which is increasingly little), the President is supposed to have a secular agenda.

I am sick of explaining the separation clause.

I was compelled to do so HERE a little over a week ago.

I shouldn't have to anymore.

We are not a Theocracy.

This country is not supposed to be the dominion of repressive Christianists any more than it ought to be surrendered to Islamo-Supremacists.

This is a land which was founded first and foremost on the predicate that we must not become such a place.

Perhaps someone should inform Mitt of this fact.
