Banning Günter Grass

April 9th, 2012

Nobel Laureate Günter Grass has been declared persona non grata by the nation of Israel. The reason?

He wrote a poem.

Before going further, I suggest that you read it for yourselves HERE.

Personally, my only real criticism of the work is that (at the ripe age of 84) Mr Grass seems to have lost his artful touch. Perhaps its weakness lies in the translation.

As far as its substance is concerned, Grass has simply suggested that Israel's possession of an utterly opaque and never internationally inventoried nuclear arsenal "endangers an already fragile world peace." He has also decried the hypocrisy of their threatening an all-out war with Iran for maintaining the same refusal to allow transparency.

This is plainly rational. The response of Prime Minister Netanyahu's governing coalition is not. The Guardian reports:
"On Sunday, Israel's interior minister Eli Yishai used a law permitting a bar on entry to former Nazis to declare Grass persona non grata for his "attempt to fan the flames of hatred against the state of Israel and its people, and thus to advance the idea to which he publicly affiliated in his past donning of the SS uniform."
With all due respect, Mr. Grass was born on October 16th, 1927. When Germany invaded Poland he was eleven years old. The Nazi regime's desperate conscription of children as their fortunes of war turned is well documented. Indeed, the total of Grass' combat experience lasted from February to April of 1945.

Neither the ugly fact of Hitler's child victimization nor Grass' long support for Israel's right to exist has prevented some in the Netanyahu regime from painting a very different picture. The ultra-radical Yeshai went so far as to call for Grass' Nobel to "withdrawn."

The N.Y. Times reports on Grass' reaction:
"Two days after his poem appeared, Mr. Grass said in an interview that he had meant to focus his attack not so much on Israel as on the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"The man who damages Israel the most at the moment is in my opinion Netanyahu, and I should have included that in my poem," Mr. Grass said. "What is now an imminent threat is a risk without parallel — a preventive strike, a first strike against Iran, which would have terrible consequences."
The standard attack from Israel's American patrons on that country's critics is that 'they are the only free and Democratic nation in the Middle East.' How does barring the entry of a Nobel winner for the composition of a poem square with our supposed ideals?

Larry Durfner notes wryly:
"... in a way, he’s getting off easy; when ex-Mossad boss Meir Dagan started criticizing Netanyahu and Barak’s plan to bomb Iran, his diplomatic passport was revoked and some cabinet ministers demanded he be investigated for endangering national security.
So it doesn’t matter if Grass was in the Waffen SS (drafted at age 17 at the end of WWII). That makes him an easy target for Israel’s enforcers, but when you’re dealing with antiwar critics, any excuse will do: he’s a German, he’s a gentile, he’s a Jew who doesn’t live in Israel, he’s a fifth-column Jew living in Israel. Whatever. The point is to shut up criticism of Israel’s right to make war whenever and wherever it wants."
The American right is engaging in the same ugliness. Indeed, over at Pajamas Media, Benjamin Kerstein wrote recently that "all criticism of Israel not only can be but must be antisemitic." EMPHASIS HIS

And some wonder why I so rarely venture into this territory.

The Twitter Supremacy...

Oct 5th, 2011

To be fair, an individual from Andy's team told me to basically suck it and stop being a "doofus" and asked if I cared that #tcot is never trending on twitter. Actually, I do. The entire concept of faking what is billed as an open and free internet community is bullshit. Anyway... Here's what's up.

The conservative, troll-brigade has been having a jolly good time on twitter today, making fun of the Occupy Movement by using the hashtag #OccupyWallStreetMovies. At the same time, #OccupyWallStreet, a hashtag being used by supporters and detractors alike has failed consistently to trend for the last three weeks.

At 3:40pm CST 10/05/11, we began an experiment. We opened and refreshed windows using both tags simultaneously. Here are the results 45 minutes later.

First, the #OccupyWallStreetMovies screengrab

Now, the #OccupyWallStreet screengrab at the same time

And, lastly, the "trending" screengrab at the end of our little experiment

How To Tell "News" From "Not News"

Sept 28th, 2011

How do we tell the difference between what is and what is not "news?" Who knows. I do somehow think corporate sponsorship just might actually have something to do with it.

Of course, in the last 24 hours, I have been called  a "Marxist," a "Communist," and a "Fascist" who is "going to die" when "the Tea Party restores freedom and kills" me.

So what do I know. Anyway, here's an easy visual guide to what is and is not "news."

Yahoo Censored Wall Street Protest E-Mails

Sept 21st, 2011

It sounds more like the kind of thing you'd expect to hear about in China than the United States. But it happened.

Lee Fang reported for ThinkProgress earlier today:

"Thinking about e-mailing your friends and neighbors about the protests against Wall Street happening right now? If you have a Yahoo e-mail account, think again. ThinkProgress has reviewed claims that Yahoo is censoring e-mails relating to the protest and found that after several attempts on multiple accounts, we too were prevented from sending messages about the “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrations."

AlterNet reports that the company has apologized. Not good enough. This demands a thorough investigation.

The video below shows what Yahoo users experienced.

How The Internet Is Telling Us What We Want

May 3rd, 2011

Meet Eli Pariser of TED. The following is a presentation from a recent TED Talk in which he demonstrates how many of the sites we use most on the internet are editing what we see without our knowledge. In everything from search engines to social networks, algorithms are selecting out certain information based on past use in the name of "personalization." His examination of different Google Search results across multiple users during the Tahrir Square demonstrations is a bit chilling.

Facebook, Political Speech, And Me...

April 6th, 2011
from F. Grey Parker
UPDATE  9:23pm CST 4/9/2011 Facebook has returned The Hand to unrestricted share status.

UPDATE 12:37am CST 4/7/2011 The primary site is postable again on FB but only through copy/paste. The share button system is still blocking it as offensive. Still no explanation FB. Thank you to everyone who has attempted to contact them and moved the ball towards the goal line.

original post
Well. It's been a heckuva few hours. A funny thing happened. Apparently, a group of organized pro-Scott Walker trolls has targeted me. They have successfully flagged this URL as "abusive." This was brought to my attention by members of a group on FB called "Recall Scott Walker." They let me know that my work was no longer postable.

I was taken aback to say the least. I have made no violations of Facebook's "terms of service." I have not abused anyone in chats. I have not posted my work in conservative forums. Hell, I haven't even had a friendly argument with my favorite archly-conservative personal friend in the last week. But, you know, the Tea Party is all about "freedom." They're trying to protect the country from all of us "freedom hating progressives."

Riiiiiiiight. I encourage all readers who appreciate my work, and even the ones who don't, to please attempt to share THIS LINK from the past weekend on Facebook if they have accounts. And then fill out the form explaining that my site is not "abusive or spammy." This link is one of the little things I post to bring a smile in between the politics. It's Snoopy. Ice skating. I hope that this encourages Facebook to acknowledge the absurdity of their actions. You will receive the image below... unless the situation has been rectified.

Allen West - Florida's Fascist Representative

Dec 14th, 2010
Think Progress just released a hell of a clip of the notorious incoming Florida Representative Allen West. He's a fascist. That's just all there is to it. We don't "censor" news agencies in America. Apparently, that's just silly talk to him.

From Think Progress:
"WEST: There are different means by which you can be attacked. I mean it doesnt have to be a bomb or an airplane flying into a building. It doesn’t have to be a shooting. It can be through cyber attacks, it could be through leaking of very sensitive classified information. Regardless of whether you think it causes any harm, the fact that here is an individual that is not an American citizen first and foremost, for whatever reason gotten his hands on classified American material and put it out there in the public domain. And I think that we also should be censoring the American news agencies which enabled him to do this and also supported him and applauding him for the efforts. So that’s kind of aiding and abetting of a serious crime."

Audio of the statements is below. For more on West and some of the other Freshmen crazies, click here
