Saturday Round Up of Interesting Things

Sept 3rd, 2011

Just a few recommendations.

-  If you haven't already read it, former Reagan and Bush 1 economic adviser Bruce Bartlett's endorsement of higher taxes on the wealthy is a must.

"Growth was stronger in the 1990s when the relative revenue loss was small and was dismal during the George W. Bush administration, when two-thirds of the aggregate revenue loss occurred.

It is not class warfare to suggest that the richest 1 percent of people in society pay one-third of their income to the federal government, as they did under Ronald Reagan. Keep in mind that dividends were taxable as ordinary income every year of his administration, and in the Tax Reform Act of 1986 he supported taxing capital gains as ordinary income as well."

The Onion Covers The Debt Deal

August 1st, 2011

And they do so splendidly:

"WASHINGTON—Following Sunday’s pathetic excuse for an agreement on raising the government’s borrowing limit, Democrats and Republicans took time to celebrate the meager, ineffective deal, calling it “a testament to the not-so-great things that can happen in Washington when both parties barely come together and agree to not really accomplish anything.” “It took months of phone calls, negotiations, and meetings, but finally we created a pretty sad version of a framework that, we’re happy to say, none of us is really proud of, and that doesn’t really do much to solve our country’s fiscal problems at all,” said House Speaker John Boehner, who gave a cheerful thumbs up and added that the sorry piece of legislation was expected to pass both houses of Congress with a really pitiful display of bipartisan support. “Once again, Democrats and Republicans have demonstrated why our mangled, fractured, barely functioning democracy is the greatest in the world.” At press time, members of both parties were trying to explain to their supporters how the budget agreement could in any possible way be construed as a victory for them."

It's Really Not The Onion

June 10th, 2011

HT to Andrew Sullivan for this... Headlines that seem like they simply have to be Onion headlines now have their own tumblr. Here's a good one.

Just in case you think they're pulling your leg, they all have active links. Here is the original from the San Francisco Chronicle.

Jan Brewer Gets It From The Onion

Dec 18th, 2010

In what is actually a pretty perceptive analysis by The Onion, Jan Brewer gets skewered over SB 1070 ,which we have been recommending every American read for months because it is still an insane giveaway of taxpayer money to the private corrections system:

"Brewer also made it possible for citizens to sue police officers who fail to carry out the troublingly vague terms of the new law, no matter how much it might tie up the state's court system—a bold stance the federal government simply couldn't be bothered with.
And shouldn't be bothered with, because it's a really, really awful idea.
Like the growing tide of up and coming conservative politicians, Brewer understands that real change—the disturbing, almost surreal kind of change that drives a wedge between Americans, increases fear and xenophobia, and makes Arizona, and by extension the nation as a whole, seem impossibly backward—has to start at home."
