Partisan Evil Beyond All Measure

Scott Keyes reports for ThinkProgress:
"The campaign manager of Arkansas Democratic congressional candidate Ken Aden arrived home last night to find his child’s pet cat murdered on the front porch with the word “LIBERAL” scrawled across its lifeless body."
You read that right. There's more over at Blue Arkansas including a picture of the poor animal we can't bring ourselves to republish:
"Last night, I got the most chilling phone call I have ever received. It was Jake Burris, Ken Aden’s campaign manager. Last night, Jake and his four kids had come back to their Russellville home. As they were getting out of the car, one of his children discovered their family cat dead on the front porch. One side of the animal's head had been bashed in and an eyeball was hanging out of its socket. But there was something even more horrifying to be found on the corpse.
Written across the animal’s fur in black marker was the word "LIBERAL".
This is terrorism. There’s no other word for it. A police report has been filed. Jake said the kids seem to be handling it okay. The one that discovered the cat was too young to be able to read and Jake had quickly gotten the others into the house before they saw it. Pope County is an insanely conservative area and the Aden campaign has been shaking things up even there and it looks like another right wing sociopath with a taste for violence has come crawling out of the woodwork in response. I asked Aden for a comment on the record:
"This is sickening. To kill a child’s pet…I'm at a loss for words…I've seen the best and the worst of humanity, but this is something else."
Both Ken and Jake though made it clear that they weren’t going to back down on the campaign trail, both agreeing that caving to this kind of behavior would only make things worse.
"I've got a gun and I know how to use it," Jake said. "If I have to protect my kids I'll do it without hesitation."
We're speechless.

Occupy WalMart

Welcome to Black Friday, 2011. There were tents. There was pepper spray. There were shootings. What was absent was a coordinated media effort to depict this behavior as broadly emblematic of all those who participated or any offers from powerful lobbyists to help them do so. The response from the powers that be is clear; the challenges presented by citizens assembling to redress grievances are too dangerous and will not be tolerated. A little peripheral violence and chaos associated with shopping, however, is what real America is all about.
And... there off...

Identifying The Bad Guys

In the footage and on the scene reports from the Occupy Wall Street rally in New York, it does seem to be the white collar police officers in particular who are instigating a majority of the violence.
We don't know who they are, but we need to find out. If they are not charged criminally, they should should at least be subjected to civil suits.

Mubarak's Heavies

A short time ago, Egypt's new Mubarak-appointed VP, Omar Suleiman, made a statement in which he apologized for the violence in Tahrir Sqaure while simultaneously blaming it on "outsiders" and "foreign" agitators. Suleiman's history as one of Mubarak's torturers is widely documented.
The following is an account of yesterday's clashes.
David D. Kirkpatrick and Kareem Fahim report:
"President Hosni Mubarak struck back at his opponents on Wednesday, unleashing waves of his supporters armed with clubs, rocks, knives and firebombs in a concerted assault on thousands of antigovernment protesters in Tahrir Square calling for an end to his authoritarian rule."
"The deployment of plainclothes forces paid by Mr. Mubarak’s ruling party — men known here as baltageya — has been a hallmark of the Mubarak government, and there were many signs that the violence was carefully choreographed.
The Mubarak supporters emerged from buses. They carried the same flags and the same printed signs, and they all escalated their actions, from shouting to violence, at exactly the same moment: 2:15 p.m. The protesters showed journalists police and ruling party identification cards that they said had been taken from Mubarak supporters who had been caught infiltrating Tahrir Square, also known as Liberation Square, and detained in a holding pen.
The preparations for a confrontation began Wednesday morning, a day after Mr. Mubarak pledged to step down in September while insisting that he would die on Egyptian soil. The president’s supporters waved flags as though they were headed to a protest, but armed themselves as though they were itching for a fight."

This photo is causing quite the stir around the world. It should. It shows an Egyptian protester holding one of the hundreds of spent tear gas canisters that litter the streets of Cairo. As you look at it, remember that it was our tax dollars that payed for it's manufacture. It was our tax dollars that payed for it's shipment it to Mubarak's regime. It was our country that made it possible for a people crying out against their own tyrannical government to be abused with "low-intensity" chemical weapons.

Peretz Chimes In On The Egyptian Bombings

Well, it was just a matter of time before Marty Peretz, publisher of The New Republic, came slinking back to the discourse on the Middle East. After his tremendous blunders earlier this year in which he first seemed to argue that American Muslims should be stripped of their 1st Amendment protections and then issued an "apology" that only made matters worse, he was relegated to untouchable status in every forum where he once commanded attention.
He needed just the right moment, maybe even a catastrophe, to get back in the game.
