10:00pm CST For all of Newt's chatter about being the "anti-establishment" candidate, his performance tonight was clearly geared to diffuse establishment concerns over his temperament. It's a big risk for him. The Newt as throat-slitter persona was what propelled him to such a huge victory in South Carolina and was girding his rising numbers in Florida. It will be interesting to see where those numbers go over the next few days.
Who knows what his SuperPACs and proxy fighters have planned. After all, tomorrow comes the tepid Romney tax return release which is bound to provide some fodder.
Santorum had a very good night. His composure was impeccable. Unfortunately, he is still insane. Particularly on issues of foreign policy, the man is simply dangerous.
Ron Paul proved, again, that it's unusual for a GOP contender not to beat the drums for perma-war.
As for Romney's performance, it was, above all else, just not very likable. He seems wildly unaware of how his own fortune, detachment from the ordinary citizen and, yes, Bain are going to be serious liabilities. He also forgets that while many Americans are opposed to Obama's policies, a huge majority basically does like the guy. His attacks were clumsy, ham-fisted and they drifted to the personal too often.
If he does get the eventual nomination, there's nearly no way he can win.
And that, as they say, is that.

Quote Of The Day - Here and Now Edition
Jan 2nd, 2011
"The GOP played with fire, and they are getting their hands burned. They unleashed a monster they hoped to turn against Democrats, but it has turned on them first."
-- James Zogby on the Tea Party's influence in shaping the 2012 Presidential field.

Dog Catches Car
Dec 5th, 2011
Paul Krugman points out one of the risks should the GOP defeat Obama next year:
"The Washington Post quotes an unnamed Republican adviser who compared what happened to Mr. Cain, when he suddenly found himself leading in the polls, to the proverbial tale of the dog who had better not catch that car he’s chasing. “Something great and awful happened, the dog caught the car. And of course, dogs don’t know how to drive cars. So he had no idea what to do with it.”
The same metaphor, it seems to me, might apply to the G.O.P. pursuit of the White House next year. If the dog actually catches the car — the actual job of running the U.S. government — it will have no idea what to do, because the realities of government in the 21st century bear no resemblance to the mythology all ambitious Republican politicians must pretend to believe. And what will happen then?"

The President Asks Us To "Push Back"

A Dope, A Joke and A Fraud
Aug 23rd, 2011
Over at Politico, Ben Smith and Jonathan Martin cut through the window dressing and expose the growing anguish of "conservative intellectuals" over the 2012 front-runners.
"The problem, in shorthand: To many conservative elites, Rick Perry is a dope, Michele Bachmann is a joke, and Mitt Romney is a fraud."

It's a shame that Huntsman has exposed his commitment to rationality. He'd probably make a decent President. And the base Republican just wants a guy or gal who wears some crazy-pants.

But Wait! There's More!
Aug 21st, 2011
Over the last several weeks, the GOP race for 2012 has resembled nothing so mach as one of those late night Ronco commercials. Just when you think they shown you all the products, there still more!
Continuing this trend comes word that former NY Governor George Pataki might jump in.

The "Senior" Vote
July 8th, 2011
With all the fearmongering and hullabaloo over potential threats to the nation's social contract (conservatives call it "entitlements), just what is the finger on the pulse of America's senior citizens telling us?
It is revealing some really serious potential trouble for the Republicans. Perhaps President Obama should pay heed. After all, this is the single most reliable turnout demographic in national elections.
From NBC:
"Whether it’s due to the current Medicare debate, the end of the health-care fight (in which the GOP clubbed Democrats on Medicare), or something else, Republicans are losing ground with seniors. In our combined NBC/WSJ polls for the first half of this year (so 4,800 total interviews, including 711 seniors), 44% of seniors identify themselves as Democrats, versus 35% who identify themselves as Republicans. So a nine-point spread. But in our merged NBC/WSJ polls from 2010 (12,502 interviews, including 1,931 seniors), Democrats held just a two-point edge among seniors, 42%-40%. Why is this important? Because last year -- when they won control of the House and made gains in the Senate -- Republicans overperformed with seniors. According to the exit polls, the GOP won the senior vote by more than 20 percentage points, 59%-38%. But in 2008, McCain beat Obama among seniors by eight points, 53%-45%. And in 2006, Democrats split the senior vote, 49%-49%."
Mr. President, about that little release yesterday regarding social security? Really bad idea.
