Yup, by golly. Governor half-term is telling everyone to cast a vote for Newt in the Florida GOP primary to, and I quote, "annoy a liberal." This leads me to believe that her insulation from liberals is absolute as they almost uniformly are salivating at the prospect of a Gingrich candidacy.
You know who really is annoyed? Her loyal followers on Facebook. You betcha.

What Newt Winning South Carolina Will Mean

I think it's clear that Newt is going to win the South Carolina Primary.
There you go. I am all in. I thought there was every reason to believe Santorum could take Iowa and, now, it's been reported that he actually did.
(I would love to see that kind of vote counting mix-up in an interparty contest met by so many GOP yawns. But, that is another story.)
In the first Public Policy Polling score ahead of the South Carolina primary, Newt was beating Romney by 6 points. After last night's "debate" and Romney's mind-blowingly poor performance, those numbers have pretty much held.

Newt's Bloodlust

In the early morning hours (seriously) following the final vote tally from the Iowa Caucus Circus, I wrote that Mitt Romney should be ready for the worst enemy he will face this year... Newt Gingrich. I found his declaration of war concession speech downright frightening.
Shortly after the speech, Business Insider's Glynnis MacNicol wrote, "Watch out Mitt Romney. Seriously, watch out."
Even Rush Limbaugh seems to agree that this is remarkable stuff. "Newt came out there... and he is mad. He is ticked off. He is livid." He goes on, "Newt's not getting out. He's in this to destroy Romney now." EMPHASIS OURS
Any GOP operative who truly believes in their party should be having a nervous breakdown.
David Corn seems to have had the same idea:
"Newt Gingrich has finally reached his destiny: destroyer of the GOP.
In a bitter and spiteful concession speech last night in Iowa—Kanye West could do no worse—the former House speaker, who finished fourth, signaled a shift in his mission. He would no longer be running to obtain the Republican presidential nomination; he would be campaigning to obliterate Mitt Romney. He would be Sherman; the former Massachusetts governor would be Georgia."
Exactly. Newt is a very vengeful man. Everyone inside the beltway knows this. With two New Hampshire debates this weekend, the rest of the country is about to find out just how vengeful he can be.
Peter J. Boyer reports on Newt's first brutal salvo:
"The effort to derail Mitt Romney’s presidential quest heightened dramatically on Friday when a super PAC associated with Newt Gingrich outbid all comers for the rights to a scathing 30-minute attack video depicting Romney as a greedy, job-killing corporate raider “more ruthless than Wall Street.”
In a season filled with negative ads and rhetorical crossfire, the striking feature of the film, aside from its mini-documentary length, is its authorship. The film was made by Jason Killian Meath, a former associate of Romney’s top strategists, Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer. Meath had worked for the Romney campaign in 2008, creating much of the ad content for that failed effort. He left Stevens and Schriefer’s firm, SSG, in 2010. Meath declined to comment on his project, referring inquiries to the pro-Gingrich PAC Winning Our Future."
Now, I have said for months that Romney's record at Bain would be the heartiest red meat Obama could feed to the masses in the general election. But, until this week, I never suspected it would be a GOP rival that would make it fair game.
Think about it. Newt is the "not-Romney" whose contribution to the debate over the Occupy Movement was to tell everyone involved to "take a bath." Then, of course, came his racially-coded suggestions that we make janitors out of our "urban" children. This is a man who has arguably leveled more viciously convoluted and borderline lunatic charges against the sitting President than any other major GOP contender.
What this means is that Newt has effectively neutered the potential for the GOP to spin future attacks on Romney's business record by Democrats as "class warfare." He's making them now which means that all President Obama has to do later is to quote them.
What's more, Newt is just getting started.
It's nearly ten months until the election. We may be witnessing the beginnings of the GOP's death-rattle before it fractures into several parties.
In the near to short term, one of two things is going to happen:
A. Romney is going to wrap up the nomination so battered that he will have a less plausible chance for victory than Bob Dole had in '96 (that means slightly less than none).
B. Rick Santorum is going to somehow actually become a major Presidential nominee in the 21st Century and not the 19th.
I would caution the GOP that either option is just fine with every Democratic operative in the United States.
The second option, however, is preferred.

"Newt Gingrich is already in New Hampshire and kicked off his day with a town hall meeting in Concord. Gingrich fielded a number of questions about drug policy, including one from a man who said that many in the Live Free or Die state don't like the federal government's involvement in stopping weed growing operations. "Would Thomas Jefferson or George Washington be arrested for growing marijuana?" the man asked.
Gingrich responded, "I think Jefferson and George Washington would strongly discourage you from growing marijuana, and their tactics to stop you would be more violent than they would be today."
Gingrich, a historian, did not mention that both Washington and Jefferson grew hemp on their plantations." EMPHASIS OURS

Definitely one of the funniest things I have seen so far in the GOP campaign cycle. During a meet and greet with average Iowans today, one man decided to tell Newt how really feels. "Ya know somethin? You're a fucking asshole." Arguably, it was the most honest moment broadcast by CNN in the last decade.

Newt Watch - Full On Fascism

Even before Newt Gingrich's remarks regarding the judiciary during the most recent GOP debate (we live-blogged it HERE), he had already provoked criticism over his distorted notions of the separation of powers. Notably, former George W. Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey called them, "dangerous, ridiculous, totally irresponsible, outrageous, off-the-wall and would reduce the entire judicial system to a spectacle."
As has always been the case with Newt, when faced with any intelligent criticism, he doubles down. In a conference call with the press yesterday, he vowed that, as President, he would simply ignore any Supreme Court ruling with which he disagrees.
Russel Berman notes:
"Gingrich’s position represents, in effect, a direct challenge to the interpretation of Marbury v. Madison, the seminal 1803 Supreme Court decision that established the principle of judicial review and cemented the high court as the ultimate arbiter of whether congressional or executive acts are constitutional."
This is classic Gingrich; throw bombs and grin as they go off around our political landscape. We should be used to it.
However, his appearance on today's Face The Nation program was worse than merely reasserting an anti-Constitutional position. When asked about the "practical" dilemmas inherent in his proposal that congressional subpoenas be issued to judges whenever he disagrees with them, he said, "sure," he'd have judges arrested and forcibly compelled to explain themselves... politically.

"We’re at a critical moment in the 2012 Republican primary cycle. Not only are we less than three weeks before the Iowa Caucuses. We’re also likely to find out in the next several days whether we really have a Romney-Gingrich race or whether Gingrich is yet another flash-in-the-pan whose numbers spiked and then collapsed. The bettors at Intrade have clearly made up their mind for the latter option. A few days ago, Gingrich almost overtook Romney. But tonight the odds give Romney almost a 65% shot at securing the nomination and Gingrich just under a 15% chance."

With the spectacular flame-out of the last, most recent, front-runner for the GOP nomination, Herman Cain, nearly complete, it does seem that Gingrich is getting what some are calling a "Cain bounce." The latest numbers from Public Policy Polling certainly bear this out.

The Continuing Freakshow

On this morning's FOX and Friends, there was a spectacle that only a few years ago would have been impossibly absurd. Following an appearance by Newt Gingrich during which Brian Kilmeade seemed to want to give him a hummer, Brian went to his "panel." It consisted of Jonah Goldberg, The National Review's brilliant but generally wrong neo-con, Robin Quivers of Howard Stern fame and pseudo-stoner-comedian Jim Breuer. You can't make this up.
Little was learned. The only comment that was interesting or amusing came from Breuer, who said of Newt's head that it's "getting bigger and bigger." One wonders what Paddy Chayefsky would say.

Newt Gingrich has outdone himself. It wasn't enough that yesterday he chose to mark the anniversary of 9/11 by releasing his Citizen's United propaganda DVD at $19.95 a pop. Nope, there's further contribution to our national dialog in the form of verbal bomb throwing over at the National Review.
“What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” Gingrich asks. “That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior.”
In the interview, he cites and seems to draw strength from a recent anti-Obama hit piece in Forbes by Dinesh D'souza. Although his own inflammatory comments are getting the most coverage, I think it is this alignment with D'Souza that is both more telling and more offensive.
