THERE ARE LINKS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST TO HELP DEFEND WOMEN'S ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE
Indiana's Rep. Mike Pence (R-Dist 6) managed to successfully endanger the health of women nationwide yesterday. The Republican dominated House of Representatives passed his amendment to fully defund taxpayer support of Planned Parenthood by a vote of 240-185.

Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America was blunt in her response. "To be clear, the amendment to prohibit Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funding does nothing to reduce the deficit and it does nothing to improve the economy. In fact, health professionals will actually lose their jobs as a result, and, most egregiously, it takes health care away from American women who cannot afford to pay for it on their own."
That this is a dangerous assault on women's healthcare in general was recognized by one pro-life Democrat who nevertheless voted against the measure in spite of his views.
From Politico:
"Anti-abortion Democrat Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts said last night that in spite of his beliefs, he supports the organization.
“This is about the ability of Planned Parenthood to conduct women's health care, to offer services that are deeply needed in many communities where no other source of health care is available…. I don't have many friends in the Planned Parenthood community. They don't support me. I am pro-life. But I respect the good work that they do,” he said."
For now, we can chalk this up as yet another culture-war distraction from the economy on the part of social conservatives for two reasons. As Donny Shaw writes for open congress.org:
"First, the Senate, which is still controlled by Democrats, will never agree to this. Some Republicans — namely Sen. Olympia Snowe [R, ME] and Sen. Susan Collins [R, ME] — have even said that they would oppose an attempt to block Planned Parenthood from receiving funding. Senate Democrats are confident they have the votes to block this.
The second problem is that it is clearly unconstitutional. Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution forbids Congress from passing bills of attainder, i.e. laws that punish a specific individual or group that have not been given a judicial trial. The Republicans passed a similar bill of attainder last year against the community organizing group ACORN that resulted in the federal government being sued. The Republicans may want to repeat that, but nobody else does." HAT TIP - THE POLITICAL CARNIVAL
