There is a growing chorus questioning whether or not Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas should have recused himself from the increasingly controversial Citizen's Untied decision. Mr. Thomas wife, Virginia, is the founder of the Tea Party affiliated Liberty Central.
From AllGov:
"In January, the high court ruled it illegal to limit the spending of businesses and organized labor, clearing the way for big-money interests to pour huge sums into the 2010 election. In order to cloak their spending, many contributors are giving to certain nonprofit groups, like Liberty Central, which are not required by law to disclose their financial backers.
Ginny Thomas launched her organization in late 2009 with two unidentified gifts of $500,000 and $50,000."
In any other legal venue, the discovery of a conflict of interest is appealable to a higher body. There is no appeal from the Supreme Court. The justices who preside over our most August legal panel are depended upon to hold themselves to an impeccable standard. The only recourse for malfeasance at their level is impeachment.
For years, I have described Thomas as easily the worst Justice in my lifetime. There have been many questions regarding his judgement over the last 20 years. It is arguable that had we scrutinized his actual record with the same drooling interest we paid the vulgar details of the Anita Hill affair, the man would never have been seated.
