Sam Seder Defends The Occupation

Oct 2nd, 2011

In response to a particularly smug and, at times, downright disturbing opinion piece from the Daily News, Sam Seder had a few things to say:

I will be honest. I have received some blow back regarding my calls last week for more focused demands from the Occupy Wall Street movement. I was even derided by one reader for being a member of the "professional left," which is nuts. The thing is, I stand firmly behind the action. I am not arguing against it. This civil disobedience probably should have been engaged in 30 years ago when the seeds for the current state of American misery were being planted. Now, the uprising has become inevitable.

There is no safety on the sidelines. There are no sidelines. We are all in this together. We must openly join them and publicly support them.

  1. I also stand behind the action, but with a small level of caution and worry.

I felt, like you, that there needed to be more focused demands (and that looks like that has happened, which is good). And I also feel that there needs to be an acknowledgement that this will hopefully lead to political action, ie voting in more progressive candidates who will pursue better policies of regulation in regards to Wall Street.

This should have happened years ago. It is ironic that it is happening now, after there has been action taken by the Obama administration to put more regulations on Wall Street (despite Matt Taibbi's claims to the contrary).

If, however, these protests end up blasting only the President--who has gone after Wall Street and is certainly not in their pocket and has done more for progressives than many of his predecessors--instead of focusing on the GOP and that party's arm-in-arm relationship with Wall Street--then a terrible mistake would have been made.

I hope this doesn't happen, and I do hope that this action leads to a positive political result. The Wall Street occupation of 2011 must result in the defeat of the GOP in 2012. If that doesn't happen, then....
